A REAL Vintage Wedding! An Army Major & The Police Chief’s Daughter.

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Whilst recently clearing much of the property from my Grandparents home, my dad came across a box of amazing photos that delves deep into our family history. Unfortunately, my Grandmother is no longer well enough to help us put stories to these photos, or to give us any information relating back to her parents or grandparents and their own family histories.

As a wedding photographer, I find the small set of photos I’ve posted here totally fascinating. Having heard only a few stories from my Gran about her time growing up in India, including some about the wedding day, they really help bring the past to life once more through these images, and I can only imagine what a Wedding in Delhi must have been like all those years ago.

Little stories help piece this history back together. One tale I remember was when, as the daughter of Delhi’s Chief of Police, she was travelling to her wedding in a Police convoy. Her car subsequently broke down, and she had to run through Delhi the rest of the way to the church to get to her own wedding! As you can imagine from the photos below, the wedding was obviously quite an event, and with a British Army Major (my grandfather) as the groom.

I hope you like these photographs, and this little snippet of my family history.

(Note: The top photo was hand-coloured using photo-dye inks by my grandmother many years back. I think it’s great!)
